KANTHA:~ Or Kontha or Kheta in Bengali meaning “rags” or “worn cloth”.

A one-of-a-kind piece of textile history, each of our vintage Kantha throws is made from layers of recycled Indian cotton, pieced together and hand-stitched using the traditional Kantha running stitch.

Kantha is an ancient Indian textile craft originally started as a form of thrift and resourcefulness - a way of giving worn and discarded fabrics a new life. Women from Bengali regions would layer together old cloth and stitch through the layers, creating beautiful, practical textiles that could be used, mended and added to over time.

What began as a practical way to recycle old textiles over time evolved into a folk art.

Each throw is completely unique, with a different design and colour on either side. The layers are soft and lightweight, with the hand stitching creating beautiful texture and movement throughout the piece.

Use yours as a throw over the bed or sofa, a wall hanging or textile artwork, a doorway panel, or take it outdoors as a picnic or beach blanket.

100% recycled cotton | Light–medium weight | Print on both sides | Vintage & one of a kind

PLEASE NOTE: THESE ARE GENUINE VINTAGE TEXTILES AND THEIR IMPERFECTIONS ARE PART OF THEIR CHARACTER.

  • You may find areas of fraying or worn fabric.

  • You may find patches or areas that have been repaired.

  • You may find faded sections, marks or variations in the original fabric.

  • The stitching may be uneven in places, reflecting its handmade nature.

  • Generally, one side will be in slightly better condition than the other, with fewer visible faults. This is not always the case, but where possible, the textile has been selected with one main display side in mind.

These are not new, pristine quilts. They are vintage textiles that have lived a previous life and bear the marks of their age.

There are new bright perfect Kantha being made today, but ours are authentic vintage.

No two are alike, and once it’s gone, there won’t be another exactly like it.
